UUID Generator

Loading the tool…

Generate random UUIDs (version 4, also called GUIDs) for database keys, test data and configuration, one at a time or up to 10,000 at once. Choose the format your code expects, such as uppercase, no hyphens, {braces} or quoted and comma-separated for SQL. Paste existing UUIDs instead to check whether they are valid and see their version.

Tip: changing an option creates a new set of UUIDs. Paste UUIDs into the box to check them instead.

How to use the UUID Generator

  1. Enter how many UUIDs you need.
  2. Pick the format: case, hyphens, braces, quotes and separators.
  3. Press Generate. Press it again for a fresh set.
  4. Copy the list or save it as a file. To check UUIDs, paste them into the box, one per line.

How the UUIDs are made

Version 4
Each UUID contains 122 random bits plus the version and variant bits defined in RFC 9562 (formerly RFC 4122), so it is valid in every database and language that accepts UUIDs.
Secure randomness
Values come from your device's cryptographically secure random number generator (the same source browsers use for encryption keys), not from Math.random.
Uniqueness
The chance of two random version 4 UUIDs being the same is so small that it can be ignored in practice, even for billions of values.
Checking
Pasted values may include braces, quotes or a urn:uuid: prefix. Each line shows whether it is a valid UUID, its version (for example 1 time-based, 4 random or 7 Unix time-based) and its variant.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a UUID and a GUID?

They are the same thing. GUID is the name Microsoft uses; it is often written in uppercase and inside braces.

Are these UUIDs safe to use as database keys?

Yes. They are standard version 4 UUIDs. If you need keys that sort by creation time, look at version 7 UUIDs instead.

Can I use a UUID as a password or secret token?

A random UUID is hard to guess, but it is not designed as a secret. For passwords and API keys, use a dedicated password or key generator.

Are the UUIDs stored or sent anywhere?

No. They are created on your device and are not saved or uploaded.

Limitations and edge cases

  • Up to 10,000 UUIDs per run. Press Generate again for more.
  • Only version 4 (random) UUIDs are generated; the checker recognises all versions.
